MAGNETIC FIELD SPARK CHAMBERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4762172
Work was carried out to develop magnetic field spark chambers of high resolution. Initial tests were made with a 2-gap, variable spacing, variable pressure spark chamber filled successively with Ne, Ar, He, and H. A 128-gap chamber with thin plates and 3 mm spacing, having a volume of 30 x 30 x 60 cm, was built. Each plate consists of two 0.025 mm sheets of Al supported on 1.5 mm thick frames of epoxy fiberglass. The chamber drive system consists of a hard- tube trigger which fires a 3-electrode pressurized-air spark-gap. This gap then drives 8 other identical gaps, each of which has eight output cables. These go to simple ferrite-core cable-adding transformers. (M.C.G.)
