Neutron activation analysis is investigated by means of determiring trace quantities of cobalt in nickel metal and nickel salts without chemical separation. The sample is irradiated simultaneously with a standard in a reactor at a neutron flux of about 10/sup 11/n/cm/sup 2//sec for 2 hr or 3 days (5 hr each day) and then cooled for several days to decay out the induced activity of nickel. After cooling, the irradiated sample is mounted in a 3 x 3 inch sodium iodide crystal attached to a 258-channel pulse height analyzer. Cobalt is determined by gamma spectrometry, comparing the heights of photopeaks at 1.17 and 1.33 Mev of Co/sup 60/ of the sample with those of standard cobalt. (auth)
