Determination of Hafnium in Zirconium by Neutron Activation Analysis (in Japanese)

A method was devised for the non-destructive determination of hafnium in zirconium metal and zirconium compounds by neutron activation analysis. About 100 mg. of zirconium sample was irradiated along with standard at a neutron flux of about 3 x 1011ncm2/sec for 3 days (total irradiating period was about 15 hr.). After irradiation, the sample was allowed to stand for about 2 approximates 4 days to cool out the activity of short half life nuclides and then hafnium was determined by gamma ray spectrometry, comparing the peak heights of 0.066 and 0.14 Mev gamma rays from Hf181 with those from the standard. Hafnium of 0.06 to 1.1% was determined. The method is more useful routine analysis than the activation method using Hf179m point of half life of nuclide.
