THE HALF-LIFE OF $sup 181$Hf

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
The half life of Hf/sup 181/ has been reported as approximately 45 days. These determinations were made following the decay of thermal-neutron-irradiated hafnium by gross counting of both beta and gamma radiation. Since the formation of 70 day Hf/sup 175/ under these conditions is Lomparable to that of Hf/sup 181/, an attempt was made to minimize the effect of Hf/sup 175/ by production methods and to discriminate counting techniques. Counting efficiencies for the proportional counter and the scintillation counter were comparable for Hf/sup 181 and varied/ approximately lO% for Hf/sup 175/ with the scintillation counter giving the higher efficiency. Since the slightly longer half life obtained by scintillation courting is consistent with approximately 3% Hf/sup 175/ and since the proportional counter is insensitive to this contaminant, it is felt that the correct half life for Hf/sup 181/ng is 42.45 plus or minus O.O8 days.
