LONGITUDINAL SHOCKS IN UNPINCH GEOMTRIES

The propagation of longitudinal shock waves along plasma columns confined by external and internal magnetic fields is analysed. The specific cases of the unpinch'' and hardcore'' geometries are considered and their existence shown in the former case. The use of longitudinal shocks in a linear pinch for diagnostic purposes is demonstrated. (auth)
