The physical principles are described of a shock wave which arises when a thermonuclear pinched discharge is created. Distinction is made between two kinds of shock waves, namely, the hydrodynamic case where no magnetic field is involved and the hydromagnetic case when the shock wave propagates into a gas containing a magnetic field. The limitations of the former for heating the gas are discussed and the unusual features and problems of the latter are indicated. (auth)
