PATHFINDER ATOMIC POWER PLANT PROTOTYPE RECIRCULATION PUMP REPORT
The development and testing of a centrifugal pump suitable for use in the recirculation system which forces core coolant and moderator through the core at a high rate are described. The prototype is a vertical single-stage centrifugal pump driven by a 400-hp induction motor. The pump has an overhung impeller which contains a journal for a hydrostatic radial bearing. The pump casing is a circular type with diffuser. A preliminary seal test, preliminary test of lower labyrinth bushing, cold performance test, 200hour proof test, cooling jacket test, head-capacity test, shaft seal test, and operational test were carried out. The pump support design was checked thoroughly under simulated plant conditions. A pantograph attached at the centerline of each trunnion support recorded thermal expansions. They were about 15 to 20% lower than the calculated values. Maximum pipe stress with a friction force of 4040 lb acting at the supports was calculated as 1500 psi. (M.C.G.)
