EARLY HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND HAEMATOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SINGLE WHOLE-BODY X- IRRADIATION ON THE HAEMOPOIETIC SYSTEM OF MICE, RATS AND GUINEA-PIGS
Single whole-body x irradiation of 350 r was given to ddN strain mice of 5 weeks of age and to young rats; 200 to 180 r was given to young guinea pigs. In the irradiated mice a slight leukocytosis was seen 1 to 3 hours after the irradiation followed by a moderate leukopenia. The leukocyte counts were minimal on the 2nd day, then gradually recovered. The damage to the bone marrow was greatest on the 3rd day, which corresponded with the loss in weight of the spleen. On the 20th day, in irradiated rats, some increase in the leukocyte count and in the weight of the spleen and incomplete recovery of the bone marrow were recognized. The compensatory hemopoietic function of the spleen was affected most strikingly in mice, less so in rats and guinea pigs, in that order. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2: No. 10, Oct.
