COMPARATIVE HISTOPATHOLOGY OF Pu$sup 239$, Ra$sup 226$ AND Sr$sup 90$ IN PIG BONE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4758600

Miniature swine were injected intravenously with either Sr/sup 90/, Ra/ sup 226/, or Pu/sup 239/ at six weeks, six months, or one year of age to compare the relative toxicity of these radionuclides per se, and to assess the effect of age on the appearance and type of bone lesions. Eighteen months postinjection, samples of rib bone were processed by routine radioanalyses, histopathological, and histochemical methods and examined for radiation damage. It was found that irrespective of age at time of establishment of body burden, Pu/sup 239/ was more damaging to bone than Ra/sup 226/ Sr/sup 90/. (auth)
