RADIATION EFFECTS OF BONE-SEEKING RADIONUCLIDES AS DETERMINED BY HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND HISTOCHFMICAL STUDIES OF SWINE BONE
Miniature swine were injected intravenously with either Sr/sup 90/, Ra/ sup 226/ or Pu/sup 239/ at 6 weeks, 6 months, or one year of age to compare the relative toxicity of these radionuclides per se, and to assess the effect of age on the appearance and type of pathological lesions. Cellular and biochemical constituents of the blood, and x rays of representative bones were examined periodically during the course of the experiment. At autopsy, samples of rib bone were taken for radioanalysis and histopathological and histochemical examination. Significant findings are reported. It was concluded that Pu/sup 239/ in swine, irrespective of age, is more damaging per rad than Ra/sup 226/ or Sr/sup 90/. (M.P.G.)
