EVALUATION OF THE DIAGNOSTIC X-RAY DEPARTMENT FROM THE RADIATION PROTECTION POINT OF VIEW

On the basis of measurements in 51 diagnostic x-ray departments in the city of Poznan, a periodical control of apparatus and rooms was considered necessary. Elements that should be taken into consideration are: evaluation of the department as a whole; checking of the tube housing for leakage radiation; and checking of the focus-table top distance and tube filtration as well. Measurements of the primary beam, namely, the dose rate at the table top and the quality of the beam by measuring of the half value layer should be made. Measurements of scatter radiation around the screen and the x-ray apparatus shouid also be carried out. The usage and effectiveness of the staff protective shields and gonad shields for patients should be checked. The primary beam as measured at the table top in routine screening conditions (70 kV, 3 mA, 3 mm Al of total filtration) should not exceed the dose rate 5 r/min. (auth)
