Means of reducing patient exposure are discussed with particular reference to modifications of the x-ray apparatus and technique and of the organization of radiology departments. Modification of the apparatus, especially of the tube head, emergent beam, filtration, and collimation, is outlined and specific examples of correction resulting in reduced patient doses are cited. Techniques and appliances for direct gonadal shielding are described and illustrated. The influence of kilovoltage, focus-film distance, film sensitivity, and film development factors on exposure is surveyed and specific recommendations made. The organization and design of the x-ray department has an indirect bearing on the limitation of radiation-dosage to the patient, and contributes greatly to protection by ensuring that the department works efficiently with little or no duplication of work. Registration of all patients is most important of all, for a complete record of previous exposures. (BBB)
