/cap alpha/-PARTICLE MODEL OF $sup 20$Ne AND $sup 24$Mg

The alpha -particle model has been applied to the Ne/sup 20/ and Mg/sub 24/ nuclei taking as equilibrium structures a trigonal and tetragonal bipyramid, respectively. The model easily reproduces four of the five low-lying rotational bands in Ne/sup 20/, and all low-energy levels with known spin and parity in Mg/ sup 24/ are found in the theoretical spectrum. However, because of the many vibrational degrees of freedom and the small symmetry groups, there are so many rotational bands and undetermined parameters that the fits become much less significant. More new experimental levels are needed to test the alpha - particle predictions. (auth)
