Reaction mechanisms in /sup 28/Si+/sup 24/Mg/r arrow/. cap alpha. +/sup 24/Mg+/sup 24/Mg and. cap alpha. +/sup 20/Ne+/sup 28/Si

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. C; (United States)
We have studied the /sup 28/Si+/sup 24/Mg systemleading to the three-body final states..cap alpha..+/sup 24/Mg+/sup 24/Mg and..cap alpha..+/sup 20/Ne+/sup 28/Si. Full momentum reconstructionon an event by event basis allows us to obtain all kinematic quantities, andperform a comparison of competing reaction mechanisms. A search reveals verylittle evidence for the population of high-spin states in /sup 48/Crcorresponding to resonances observed in the/sup 24/Mg+/sup 24/Mg system, via the/sup 24/Mg(/sup 28/Si,..cap alpha..)/sup 48/Cr/sup */(/sup 24/Mg) and/sup 24/Mg(/sup 28/Si,..cap alpha..)/sup 48/Cr*(/sup 20/Ne)reactions. Instead, we find that the dominantprocesses that occur involve inelastic heavy-ion scattering to..cap alpha..-particle unbound states in /sup 28/Si and/sup 24/Mg.
