RELATION BETWEEN THE RADIOSENSITIVITY OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND THE RADIATION SICKNESS OF ANIMALS (in Russian)

Knowledge of the original functional status of the central nervous system and typical characteristics of higher nervous activities is important for the study of the effect of radiosensitivity of individual organs on the over- all biological effect of the radiation. This problem was investigated by comparing the injury caused in rabbits by a subsequent irradiation with the radiation sensitivity of the central nervous system. This latter property was estimated from the bio-current of the brain when either the head or the trunk of the animal was irradiated. The total dose used was 390 r to the head or 39 r to the trunk of gamma radiation, exposing the animals subsequently to an integral dose of LD/sub 50/45/= 500 r. Comparison of the radiosensitivity of the central nervous system and the injury suffered by the animal did not reveal any dlrect correlation. As a general rule, it can be stated that animals possessing higher radiosensitivity exhibited a lesser degree of radiation injury. (TTT)
