DEVELOPMENTAL ANOMALIES AND MALFORMATIONS IN THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM OF THE OFFSPRING OF $gamma$-IRRADIATED ANIMALS

Study of the developmental malformations of mammals is very important for the understanding of human malformations caused by the after effects of radiation injury. The problem was investigated by exposing guinea pigs in puberty to 225 and 400 r of gamma -radiation from a Co/sup 60/ source at a rate of 17 r/minute. All the animals exhibited the typical clinical picture of radiation injury. The sterility noted with rats 1 to 3 months after irradiation, was not observed in guinea pigs. The exposure caused changes in the central nervous system of the offspring, accompanied by eye injuries. Occasionally, malformations of the teeth, the skeleton, and the soft tissues were also noted. The anomalies observed during the development, such as hydrocephalism, degeneration of the skin, and eye injuries are attributed to mutations in the central nervous system. (TTT)
