The mechanism was designed for the automatic steering of a two-axis neutron crystal spectrometer, and at the same time, for the automatic registration of the results of the measurement such as time, number of counts in the measuring time, and the angular position of the spectrometer. The type of spectrometer measurements includes the total cross section for thermal neutrons, the inelastic phonon and magnon scattering of neutrons for monochromatic as well as white''-spectrum of neutrons, and the angular and energy distributions of neutrons scattered from liquid samples. The automatic steering mechanism makes possible the automatic steering of either the spectrometer arms or of the magnoscope with either fixed or varying angle of the first crystalline scatter, with the test sample in or out, and with measurements utilizing magnetic fields. The mechanism can also steer two turntables, one of which can be steered while the angle between the arms of the crystal spectrometer is held constant. The flow diagram (or block diagram) of the mechanism's logic is given, as is also a list of the mechanism's characteristics. (TTT)
