EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF STATISTICAL RELIABILITY OF A RADIOACTIVE RELAY WITH HYSTERESIS

ABS>A method is suggested for the experimental determination of statistical reliability of a radioactive relay with hysteresis, working at a counting speed corresponding to the maximum probability of a false switching. The method permits the tentative determination of statistical reliability at other counting speeds as well. The statistical reliability of a radioactive relay with hysteresis is defined by the quantity 1/(1 + N) where N is the average number of false switchings during 1 hr at a counting speed corresponding to the maximum probability of a false switching. A radioactive positive-circuit relay is described in which the armature of the output electromagnet is attracted upon the appearance of radiation. The upper-position switchings (lifting) are counted at several radiation-response levels of the controller, close to the response threshold, whereas the lower switchings (lowering) are counted at several levels, close to the release threshold. Discharges are counted by means of an electromechanical counter operated from output contacts of the radioactive relay. When upper-position discharges are counted, the radioactive relay is set in a lowered position. The auxiliary electromagnetic relay, connected in series with the electromechanical counter interrupts the transducer feeding-circuit after each counting pulse for a short while in order to reset the radioactive relay to its lowered position. When lower discharges are counted the radioactive relay is set in the operating position, and the auxiliary relay, after each counting pulse, feeds to the input circuit of the radioactive relay a voltage which activates it. A typical diagram for determining the statical reliability of a radioactive relay with a transducer is shown. (P.C.H.)
