The gastro-intestinal tract and in particular the small intestine of mammals is one of the most radiation-sensitive systems of the organism and injury to it strongly influences reaction to radiation injury. Thus, introduction of amino ethylisothiuronium Br. HBr (AET) reduces the number of cells exhibiting chromosome aberrations in the intestine of irradiated animals. A previously proposed quantitative method for estimating the extent of the injury and the degree of recovery of the mucous membrane of the small intestine wass further investigated; AET was used as protective agent as its action does not involve the oxygen effect, although it is not completely clarified yet. White mice were exposed to the minimum lethal dose of 700 r and to 1300 r, the intestinal dose. Injury to the small intestine was found to be nearly identical in both cases during the first few days but recovery was noted only after exposure to 700 r. Injection of AET resulted in an excellent morphological protection of the intestine, as indicated by the reduction of the number of cells exhibiting chromosome aberrations and by the increase of the mitotic index. It is of interest to note that after 3 days the mitotic index of the protected animals exposed to 700 r was somewhat reduced; this is probably due to the ability of AET to cause an increase of pathological mitoses in unirradiated animals.
