THE ASSOCIATION OF ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE + DIPHOSPHOPYRIDINE NUCLEOTIDE IN THE RADIOPROTECTION OF THE EMBRYONIC CELL

Chick embryos were irradiated with 180 r on the 60th hr of incubation. Some of the embryos were injected 1 hr earlier with 300 mg glucose-1-phosphate + glucose-6phosphate, 250 mg adenosine triphosphate (ATP), or 250 mg ATP + diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN). Examination of the heart on the 64th hr showed that none of the control irradiated embryos or those injected with glucose phosphates survived. In contrast, 50% of those injected with ATP and 70% of those injected with ATP + DPN showed heart beats. Irradiation alone caused a drop of mitotic activity in cardiac cells to one-tenth normal, and ATP + DPN practically abolished this drop, ATP being slightly less effective. The glucose phosphates had almost no effect in maintaining mitotic activity after irradiation. It is suggested that essential high-energy metabolites and cofactors may preserve cellular function after destruction of energyyielding metabolic processes by radiation. (H.H.D.)
