DETERMINATION OF THE NIOBIUM-RICH REGION OF THE TERNARY PHASE DIAGRAMS, NIOBIUM-TUNGSTEN-HAFNIUM AND NIOBIUM-TUNGSTEN-ZIRCONIUM. Quarterly Report No. 2, December 1, 1962 to March 1, 1963

A study of the phase equilibria of the niobium-rich regions of the Nb--W- -Hf and Nb--W- Zr ternary systems is being conducted with the following objectives: examine three isotherms in the temperature range from 1600 to 1000 deg C and at each temperature level, determine the terminal solid solution boundary, other phase boundaries, and identify intermediate phases which may be in equilibrium with the niobium-rich solid solutions. Metallographic examination, x-ray-diffraction analysis, and hardness measurement are being used to conduct this study. Melting of selected Nb--W--Hf ternary alloys was completed, but several key Nb--W and Nb--Hf binary alloys are yet to be melted. Two tentative isothermal diagrams at 1300 and 1100 deg C for the ternary system, Al--Nb--Zr, were constructed as a result of metallographic and x-ray-diffraction analyses. The hardness data of the ternary alloys in as-arcmelted condition and annealed at 1300 and 1100 deg C are also graphically presented. (H.G.G.)
