Metallographic and x-ray structural analysis methods and measurements of the hardness and microhardness of phases were used to study the structure of W-Nb- -Si alloys. A phase diagram was constructed of the pseudobinary section of WSi/ sub 2/- NbSi/sub 2/ in the form of a diagram with a eutectic of WSi/sub 2/ + NbSi/ sub 2/, a solid solution containing approximates 60 at.% WSi/sub 2/ and melting at 1860 deg C. The triangulation of the ternary system W-Nb-Si is indicated, and its phase diagram was constructed. Four regions of ternary solid solutions were found and approximately outlined in the ternary system on the basis of the compounds NbSi/sub 2/, Nb/sub 5/Si/sub 3/, Nb/sub 4/Si, and W-Nb. Alloys of the WSi/sub 2/- NbSi/sub 2/ system are not refractory. On heating in air to 1100- 1200 deg they become coated with a loose film of oxides, which do not prevert the further oxidation of the alloy surface. (auth)
