Radionuclides were sought in rainwater samples collected in Vienna on January 1, 1961 and May 12, 1961. Analysis of the 1st sample 33 days after collection showed the presence of 3 short-lived radioisotopes: Ba/sup 140/, La/ sup 140/, and I/sup 131/ with half lives of l3 days, 40 hr, and 8 days, respectively. These presumably originated as fission products from the French nuclear weapons test in the Sahara Desert 5 days previously, on December 27, 1960. In contrast, no radionuclides could be detected by this method on May 12, 1961 although a similar weapons test was conducted at the end of April 1961. It is suggested that the fission yield may have been lower in this 2nd weapons test. (H.H.D.)
