The I/sup 131/ activity, resulting from previous Soviet atomic weapon tests, contained in rainwater samples collected from the southwestern city limits of Vienna on November 4-5 and December 5-8, 1961, was estimated by gamma spectrometry. The periods between sample collection and measurement amounted to two half lives for the first sample and one half for the second sample. The I/ sup 131/ concentration of the first sample was about 128 pC/1, and that of the second sample about 56 pC/1. In view of the interval intervening after the weapons tests, these are reasonable decreases. These measured values are about 10/sup 2/- to 10/sup 3/fold less than the tolerance concentration accepted at present. (BBB)
