On the southwestern city boundary of Wien, rain-water samples were collected on November 4 to 5 and December 5 to 6, 1961, and therein the I¹³¹ activity originating in preceding Soviet nuclear weapon tests was determined by gamma spectrometry. In the first case, about 2 half-life periods of radioiodine elapsed between collection and measurement; in the second case about one half- life period. In the first sample the I¹³¹ concentration in the freshly fallen rain water amounted to around 128 pC/l, with the second sample around 56 pC/l. Such a decline meant that the nuclear weapon tests were stopped in the meantime. The measured values were 10² to 10³ lower than the accepted tolerance doses for I¹³¹ in drinking water. (tr-auth)
