CALCULATED RATES FOR THE REACTION $mu$$sup -$ + He$sup 3$ $Yields$ H$sup 3$ + $nu$
The effective Hamiltonian of Morita and Fujii was used to calculate the muon capture rate in He/sup 3/. The calculation was done including and omitting the weak magnetic interaction'' and for positive and negative sign of pseudoscalar coupling. The results are related to the known value of ft for the beta decay of the triton. The rms radius of the charge distribution in He/sup 3/ was taken to be 1.55 fm rsp. 1.85 fm. (The first value follows from the results of the variational calculation of Kikuta, Morita, and Yamada, the last value is based on a variational calculation for a potential with a long failed attractive part.) The capture rates differ by 10% for the two rms radii. The result for v/ sub rms/ =; 1.55 fm deviates slightly from the corresponding result of Werntz. (auth)
