PHOTOPRODUCTION OF NEUTRAL MESONS FROM HYDROGEN NEAR THRESHOLD

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4750925
The angular distributions of neutral pions produced from H by the bremsstrahlung beam of the Stanford linear accelerator were studied at three gamma energies 185, 170, and 160 Mev. A thin'' H gas target ( approx equal 35 psi pressure) was used. The recoil protons from the process gamma + p yields pi /sup o/ + p were momentum analyzed by a magnetic spectrometer and detected by two counters in coincidence, a plastic scintillator front counter 0.010 in. thick and a potassium iodide back counter 0.090 in. thick. The measurements were experimentally normalized to obtain absolute differential cross sections. At each energy the differential cross section was measured at four different angles. The coefficients of the differential cross section d sigma /d OMEGA * = A + B cos THETA * + C cos/sup 2/ THETA * and their errors were obtained by a least square fit to the measured points. (M.P.G.)
