CONSIDERATIONS ON THE RADIOSENSITIVITY OF CERVICAL UTERINE CANCERS. II. POSSIBILITIES OF AUGMENTING THE RADIOSENSITIVITY OF CERVICAL UTERINE CANCERS

Various means of increasing the sensitivity of tumors to radiation are considered, including oxygenation, hormones, chemical sensitizers, temperature changes, and other ways of altering metabolic activity. Techniques for increasing the oxygen supply of tumors during radiotherapy and the difficuities encountered are discussed. Radiosensitivity of some tumors can be enhanced by treatments with sex and adrenal steroids, gonadotropins, and thyroid hormones; however, pregnancy in rats was found to increase radioresistance of vaginal mucosa. It was also shown that, in the rat, injury to the rectum can be prevented during pelvic irradiation by local application of cystamine, without diminishing radiosensitivity of the vagina. (H.H.D.)
