NEW DATA ON THE FORMATION MECHANISM OF LIGHT NUCLEI

The formation cross sections and angviar and energy distributions of Na/ sup 24/ from proton reactions with Al, Ag, and W at 660 Mev were studied. Formation cross sections and angular distributions of F/sup 18/, Na/sup 24/, and P/sup 32/, from Sb, Sn, and U were also measured at E/sub p/ = 120 Mev in order to determine the energy dependence. The results showed that the formation cross sections for Be/sup 7/, F/sup 18/, and Na/sup 24/ at E/sub p/= 1 20 Mev are analogous to the cross sections at E/sub p/ = 660 Mev; 120-Mev cross sections being oniy an order of magnitude lower. The yield ratios for Na/sup 24/ and F/ sup 18/ are (E/sub p/ = 660 Mev) 1.6 for Sb, 2.2 for Sn, and 2.1 for U. The data on the formation cross sections and angular distributions for Na/sup 24/ from U and Cu at 120 Mev refute the meson mechanism of high momentum transfer to a nucleon group in the nucleus.
