COMPATIBILITY OF THE MAJOR ELEMENTAL COMPONENTS OF TYPE 302-B STAINLESS STEEL WITH PuO$sub 2$ AND UO$sub 2$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4750290
The compatibility of Fe, Cr, Ni, Si, and types 302 and 302-B atainiess steel powders with PuO/sub 2/ powder in sintered compacts was studied. The composition of the compacts was 50 vol% PuO/sub 2/. The powders were mixed and cold compressed at 50 tsi and the resulting pellets were sintered in argon at 1325 or 1425 deg C for times between 2 and 28 hr. The pellets were examined metallographically and their densities were determined. It was found that under the test conditions, Si and type 302-B stainless steel, but not Ni and type 302 stainless steel, reacted with PuO/sub 2/. The results for Cr and Fe were less conclusive. The compatibility of 302-B stainless steel and Si powders with UO/ sub 2/ powder was also studied. It was found that UO/sub 2/ reacted with Si but not with the stainless steel. (auth)
