COMPACTION AND SINTERING OF PuO$sub 2$-TYPE 302B STAINLESS STEEL POWDER MIXTURES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4166524
The effects of compaction pressures, sintering temperatures, and PuO/sub 2/ preparation methods on pellets of type 302-B stainless steel and PaO/sub 2/ powders and mixtures of there were investigated. The pellets were compacted at pressures of 20 to 100 tsi followed by sintering in argon at 1175 to 1680 deg C. Densities, composition, and the effect of a binder are compared with the results of metallographic examination. Definite evidence of a reaction between PuO/sub 2/ and type 302-B stainless steel was obtained. The effect of the addition of 3 wt% of type 302-B stainless steel to Mo-PuO/sub 2/ pellets was also investigated. (auth)
