ASCORBIC ACID EXCHANGE DURING THE ACTION OF X-RAYS ON THE ORGANISM

The guinea pig, following acute radiation injury, develops a vitamin deficiency condition which is manifested by vitamin C impoverishment of a number of organs. Single dose, whole-body irradiation of guinea pigs by roentgen rays in a 600-r dose lead to a decrease in the ascorbic acid level in the tissues of the brain, adrenals, testes, spleen, and small intestine, which indicates impairment of the metabolic processes in the irradiated animals. The greatest changes in the vitamin C level following acute radiation injury were observed in the neuroendocrine and blood systems The ascorbic acid content in the whole blood of the irradiated guinea pigs was reduced, particularly in the period 3rd to 7th days following irradiation. The capacity of ascorbic acid absorption by the blood proteins increased as a result of irradiation, and this indicates a decrease in the vitamin saturation of the organism. Analysis of the data obtained indicates that in the irradiated guinea pig, the organism's need for ascorbic acid increases. (auth)
