NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF RADIOACTIVE LUMINOUS PAINTS. PART II (in German)

Journal Article · · Ind. Lackier-Betrieb
OSTI ID:4749445

The scientific principles of the luminous paint industry are discussed, including the nature of radioactivity, the discovery and occurrence of natural isotopes, and the subsequent prodbction of artificial radioisotopes. The technology uf manufacturing luminous paint includes the treatment of ZnS with small amounts of Cu in order to form luminous centers, the application of radioactive substances as activators, and the use of cementing material to convert the powdery phosphor into an applicable paint. Pm/sup 147/ can be obtained by bombarding a Nd/sup 146/ target with neutrons in the atomic reactor or it can be isolated from the fission products of U decomposition. (P.C.H.)
