NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF RADIOACTIVE LUMINESCENT PAINTS. PART IV (in German)

Journal Article · · Ind. Lackier-Betrieb
OSTI ID:4757224

The effects of alpha , BETA , and gamma radiations on living organisms are discussed and classified into damages due to external radiation and damages due to the incorporation of radioactive material through inhalation or intake of contaminated food or drink. It is pointed out that a 0.5-mm thick plexiglass crystal can block off the BETA -rays of Pm/sup 147/, a radioisotope used frequently for the preparation of luminous paints. Gamma radiation is the most dangerous source of external radiation damage because of its great penetrating power. for this reason, in the manufacture of luminous paints, radiation sources are preferred which are similar to T, which is free of gamma radiation. A discussion on the biological effect of radiation, which depends not only on the type and strength of the source but also on the sensitivity and exposure of the organism is also presented. (P.C.H.)
