Safety Precautions in Atomic Pile Control (thesis); SECURITE DANS LE CONTROLE DES PILES ATOMIQUES (THESES)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4749173
The problem of safety in atomic pile control was studied. The wishes occurring in piles during their operation and also their behavior in the dynamic state were considered. The importance of intrinsic safety devices, the influence of reactivity variations on the power fluctuations during accidental operation, and the development of robust and reliable safety appliances are discussed. The starting-up accident was especially studied both for low-flux piles where a compromise is necessary between the response time of the safety appliances and the statistical fluctuations, and for high-flux piles where xenon poisoning has an effect on the lower limit of the velocity of reactivity liberation. The desirability was stressed of automation as a safety factor in atomic pile control. (auth)
