A device for monitoring an insulating tube which is located inside a pressure tube of a nuclear reactor, especially a nuclear reactor moderated by heavy water, is described. Between the insulating tube and the pressure tube, a ring-shaped space is formed which is normally filled with a stagnant coolant medium. In case of failure of the insulating tube a certain amount of coolant flow is established in this space raising the temperature of the pressure tube wall. Therefore a temperature measuring device is located within the wall of the pressure tube for registering a predetermined temperature rise. (Gmelin Institute)
