MEANS FOR DETECTING INSULATION FAILURE IN REACTOR PRESSURE TUBES
Patent

OSTI ID:4694404
A pressure tube providing a coolant channel in a power reactor is designed with means for detecting failure of its thermal insulation. The insulation comprises stagnant coolant in dimpled metal sheets between a liner and the tube, and a vent is formed between the upstream end of the insulation and the channel. A ring dividing the insulation into two sections is provided with a small aperture, and a thermocouple is located in the tube in vicinity of the aperture in order to detect temperature rises due to hot coolant penetrating the insulation.
