After completion of the above-mentioned work, a publication by D. K. Smith and C. F. Cline appeared in which the existence of cubic pure ZrO/sub 2/ at temperatures above 2285 deg C was demonstrated. Special experiments, carried out in continuation of the investigation, but incomplete at present, point to the fact that this cubic phase, unstable at room temperature, can be obtained only under extreme cooling conditions. The supposition is presented that, with increasing additions of MgO to ZrO/sub 2/, the existence region of the cubic modification is displaced to lower temperatures, whereby the cooling rates necessary to obtain the cubic crystals become increasingly smaller. If the measured course of the field between the tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/ and cubic (MgO- containing) mixed crystals obtained by A. Dietzel and H. Tober between 1400 and 1800 deg C is extrapolated, the transition temperature of the tetragonal into cubic ZrO/sub 2/ found by Smith and Cline is obtained. (M.C.G.)
