EXPERIMENTAL FINDINGS ON THE SIMILARITY OF THE VAGINAL AND BUCCAL RESPONSES TO RADIATION UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF TESTOSTERONE
Attempts were made to determine whether the radiosensitizing action of testosterone could be detected in locally irradiated rabbit tissue other than the vaginal mucosa. The jaw of rabbits was locally irradiated with 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 r doses of 50-kv x rays, given in a circular area of 2.5 cm dia), and smears of buccal cells were examined cytologically over the following 8 days. The surface area of buccai cells increased after irradiation, to a maximum on the 4th to 6th day, and the increase was proportional to the dose. Compared with a control area of 1.2, the maximum areas reached after the 5 respective x-ray doses were: 1.8, 2.3, 2.9, 4.1 and 4.8 (as 0 25 x 10/sup -6/ cm/sup 2/) Daily treatment of the rabbits with 10 mg testosterone propionate for 10 days, which did not significantly affect the control cell surface area, markedly increased the size of irradiated buccal cells. Thus, a 1000 r dose after testosteione treatment increased cell size to a degree produced by 2000-r irradiation alone. It was concluded that testosterone markedly sensitizes oral mucosa to x rays.
