ENHANCED RADIATION REACTION IN THE VAGINAL SMEAR BY HUMORAL AGENTS AND SURGICAL SPAYING
In 935 patients undergoing Ra therapy for cancer of the uteaine cervix, attempts were made to improve the cytological response by various supplemental treatments. The cytological response was evaluated by following changes induced by radiation in exfoliated squamous cells present in vaginal smears. An improved response to radiation was based on an increase in cell size, the presence of binucleated cells and pyknotic nuclei, and cytoplasmic vacuolation. The maximal radiation reaction noted in vaginal smears occurred on the 11th or 12th day following Ra therapy by the intracavitary method. Patients with good cytological responses had a singificantly higher 6-yr recovery rate than those who did not. This response was not significantly altered by concomitant treatment with testosterone propionate, alpha -tocopherol, alpha -tocopherol + testosterone, or oophorectomy. Thus, these results failed to confirm previous reports of the efficacy of supplemental therapy on the radiation response. (H.H.D.)
