Protein metabolism in rabbit bone marrow was traced at various stages starting with the moment of exposure to 1100 r and continuing through the recuperating and hematological normalization points. A sharp drop in S/sup 35/- labeled methionine incorporation in the bone marrow, spleen, and skeletal muscle was observed during acute stages. A maximum drop in protein synthesis (0.1 to 0.02% as compared to 4.5, 3.2, and 0.8% in control animals) was observed within 2 weeks of the exposure, The intensity of methionine uptake was restored and even increased to normal (10.6 and 5.5%) two months following the exposure. Therapeutic bone marrow transplantation in rabbits prevents the sharp drop in S/ sup 35/-methionine uptake. (R.V.J.)
