Thermodynamic calculations based on the experimentally determined relationship between the equtlibrium potentials of Zr and Hf in fused chlorides or mixtures of fluorides and chlorides showed that it is thermodynamically possible to separate Zr from Hf, but only in a fluoride-chloride electrolyte. At a given electrolyte composition, the lower the temperature, the lower the Hf content in Zr. At a constant temperature the degree of separation is determined by the ratio of Zr: Hf concentration in the cathode-adjacent zone of the electrolyte; this ratio should be maintained at the same level throughout the electrolyte. A lower Zr: Hf ratio in the cathode-adjacent zone would result in an increase in deposits with Hf. (OTS)
