An equimolecular mixture of NaCl and KCl was placed in an electrolyzer, and then, potassium fluorozirconate conLaining 32.9 wt% Zr 1.4 wt % Hf, and 41.8 wt % F was added to the vessel. The effect of fluoride ion, temperature, current density, and concentration of fluorozirconate in the bath on the separation of Zr and Hf was determined. Increasing the fluoride concentration in the bath from 12 to 19 wt % (from 6 to 13 g-ion F/g-ion Zr) led to an increase of Hf in Zr by a factor of 2. Hence, electrolysis in a choride bath would lead to better separation of Zr and Hf. The content of Hf in the Zr metal decreased from 0.47 wt % to 0.23 wt % on increasing the Zr concentration in the bath from 6 to 15 wt%. The amount of Hf in the Zr metal decreased from 0.35 to 0.12 wt% on decreasing the cathode current density from 4.0 to 0.2 amps/cm/sup 2/. The content of Hf in the Zr metal decreased with increasing temperature. Complex double salts of Zr covered the surface of the Zr metal, and prevented further separation of Zr from Hf. (TTT)
