STUDY OF THE INCORPORATION OF RADIOACTIVE PHOSPHORUS (P$sup 32$e IN THE ELEMENTS OF BLOOD UNDER THE ACTION IN X RAYS. II. INCORPORATION OF P$sup 32$ IN THE ERYTHROCYTES OF IRRADIATED DOGS (in French)
>The phosphorus-32 concentration of circulating erythrocytes was determined in dogs irradiated with 600- or 1000-r doses of x rays. The results were expressed in terms of biologic concentration coefficient (BCC). BCC was lower 72 hr after irradiation than in unirradiated controls, but was higher than in controls 96 and 144 hr after irradiation. Changes of BCC in whole blood parallel those in erythrocytes. The BCC was also increased in various tissues 144 hr after irradiation (liver, spleen, kidney, lung, and muscle). In dogs irradiated with 100 r it was highest in liver and lung, and after 600 r it was highest in spleen. Contrary to earlier studies, the present results do not show that erythrocytes liberate phosphate after irradiation but that P/sup 32/ uptake is diminished 3 days after irradiation and accelerated subsequently.
