STUDIES ON RECOVERY FROM RADIATION INJURY. II. OBSERVATIONS ON THE EFFECTS OF IMPLANTATION OF THE SHIELDED SPLEEN

CF1 mice were exposed to a single dose of 930 r wholebody x irradiation with lead shielding of their surgically exteriorized spleens. The mice were sacrificed at various intervals after the irradiation and their spleens were sliced prior to implantation in mice of the same strain. The recipient mice, which were used for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the spleen implants, were exposed to 930 r whole-body irradiation without shielding of their spleens. The radiation dose used was in the lethal range for mice. At the completion of radiation, the slices of 2 spleens removed from donor mice were placed in the peritoneal cavity of each recipient mouse. Spleens used for implantation were taken from donor animals 3 hr, 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, and 14 days after irradiation. The percentages of mice surviving for 28 days in the 7 groups were: 16.7, 28.6, 11.1, 0, 4.5, 42.9, and 30.8%, respectively. This is in contrast to 2.1% in control mice receiving no spleen graft and 9.5% in those receiving spleen from nonirradiated mice. A possibility for increased protective activity of shielded spleens taken after 3 hr is that noncellular elements of the shielded spleen may play an important role in recovery from radiation injury during the early period following irradiation.
