POLARIZATION OF COSMIC $mu$-MESONS

The polarization was measured for muons with a niomentum of 2.1 Bev/c by stopping the muons in a copper target surrounded by four layers of Geiger counters. The stopping of a muon in the copper registered a coincidence in layers I and III and an anticoincidence in layer IV. The resolution of the detection system was 5 x 10/sup -7/ sec. The copper target was wrapped in a solenoid which could be operated at a magnetic field of 80 Gauss. The value of R/ sub 0//R/sub 80/ was found to be 1.20 plus or minus 0.03, where R is the ratio of the number of positrons emitted up to the number emitted down; R/sub o/ and R/ sub 80/ refer to the ratios with the magnetic field being off and on, respectively. From this value of R/sub o//R/sub 80/ the muon polarization was determined to be 0.29 plus or minus 0.03. (TTT)
