POLARIZATION OF COSMIC MUONS OF VARIOUS ENERGIES

The polarization of muons, in the energy region 0.2 to 1.55 Bev, was measured by studying the asymmetry arising from the decay of these muons into electrons. The muons were stopped in a copper target surrounded by several layers of Geiger counters operating in the high-voltage region. The decay curve yielded a lifetime for the muon of 2.19 plus or minus 0.04 microsec. In all, approximately 4 x 10/sup 4/ muon decays into electrons were registered. The measurements were carried out at the following energies: 0.2, 0.3, 0.55, crease from 0.24 plus or minus 0.04 at 0.2 Bev to 0.40 plus or minus 0.05 at 1.55 Bev. The theoretical values of the polarization at these two energies are 0.23 and 0.34, respectively. (TTT)
