THE POLARIZATION OF COSMIC RAY Mu-MESONS

Journal Article · · J. Phys. Soc. Japan
OSTI ID:4754010
The polarization of cosmic-ray mu mesons coming to rest in a brass absorber was measured at sea level with 12, 700, and 3700 g/cm/sup 2/ of cover above the absorber. For the three thicknesses of cover values for the absolute polarization obtained were 0.21 plus or minus 0.03, 0.21 plus or minus 0.04, and 0.20 plus or minus 0.02, respectively. On the basis of a theory that the measured polarization depends, in part, upon the proportion of K mesons among the parents of stopped muons, K/ pi production ratios were determined for primary interaction energies of 40 and 100 Bev.
