STUDY OF EFFECTS OF IMPURITIES ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF NIOBIUM. Quarterly Progress Report No. 1, January 1, 1962 through March 31, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4745889
Recrystallization studies were conducted on pure Nb as a function of degree of formation, time, and temperature. The annealing behavior of Nb is of interest because of grain-size control and an insight into high temperature atomic mobility. Niobium has poor oxidation resistance above 400 deg C and even at pressures of 10/sup -4/ mm Hg, the metal readily oxidizes at 1200 deg C. Gas analysis on Nb was completed. Niobium samples were analyzed by vacuum fusion methods using baths of iron, nickel, or platinum. The most promising results were obtained with platinum baths. (H.G.G.)
