A reactor fuel element composed of a ceramic fuel member with an adherent coating of nonfissile metallic material and enclosed in a protective sheath is provided. Heat transfer from the ceramic fuel member is improved because there is a larger area of contact between the member and the coating deposited in the surface pores of the member than between the member and the sheath. Heat transfer to the sheath is improved because of the greater thermal conductivity of the metal coating. (C.E.S.)
